When is the best time to buy a sewing machine?

By Jessica Strohlson

Sewing machines are a significant appliance in many households, a repair instrument, and a tool to unlock inner creativity through participation in a fun hobby. However, they can be decently expensive, ranging in price from $150 to thousands of dollars. In addition, other materials associated with sewing can also be costly.

Therefore, rather than participating in an impulse buy and spending thousands, you’ll likely want to get the best deal possible on a good sewing machine and other related items. If you know when and where to look, you could save up to hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Here are some of the best times to buy a sewing machine:

Promotional Periods

Many sites have periods in which they offer promotions, discounts, and coupons, during which you could save a significant amount of money on machines, thread, etc.

To take advantage of these opportunities, you’ll want to regularly check the brand’s website you’re interested in and your email if you registered, as these promotional periods are often advertised.

If you don’t have a specific brand in mind, you can also search phrases like “sewing machines on sale” and discover new brands offering discounts.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are statistically and consistently the biggest shopping days of the year.

Black Friday is an annual day on which huge deals can be found both online and in-store. It takes place on the Friday following Thanksgiving. On Cyber Monday, the Monday after Black Friday, the sales are exclusively online.

Given that these days spark some of the most considerable price reductions of the year, you may be able to find a sewing machine significantly cheaper than the regular price.

National Sewing Month

National Sewing Month takes place in September. It originated in 1982 after being declared by Ronald Regan. The purpose of the celebratory month is to recognize self-expression and creativity.

As part of the festivities, sewing brands may offer sales to benefit those who enjoy sewing.

Sewing/ Quilting Shows and Expos

Sewing and Quilting Expos are events that feature runway shows and display galleries that display the work of many talented individuals. In addition, interested viewers and participants of these activities can register for workshops and learn new techniques.

These events also often offer machines and other sewing machines at low prices for those who are unable to break the bank to participate in sewing, quilting, and other activities.

New Model Released

A great time to look for a new sewing machine is when a new model is being released. With the release of an updated version, the price of older models will be reduced as they try to retire them and instead advertise their novel products.

Many like to keep up with the newest releases, and companies take advantage of this to earn extra money from consumers. However, it’s important to note that sewing machines and many other appliances don’t need to be the latest version to be high-quality.

End of the Month

Some retailers and appliance stores are required to meet monthly quotas when it comes to customer purchases. Therefore, at the end of the month, many eagerly await consumers to purchase to meet said standard, putting people looking for affordable sewing machines in a good spot.

They may advertise these sales. However, they may not, so a good tactic is simply asking local retailers for a discount during these periods if you’re up for it as there’s no harm in doing so. Many retailers will concede to selling at a discounted price at the end of the month.

End of Fiscal Years

A good time of year for businesses and customers alike that many don’t know about is the end of a store’s fiscal year. Many companies have an inventory sale as they want to decrease their stock to increase their revenue and appease stockholders. This helps them look like they sold more significant amounts of product throughout the year, although they get rid of loads at the end of the year and plan to purchase many new machines from manufacturers at the start of the new one.

A fiscal year is not always the same as a calendar year. Instead, the end of the year usually corresponds with the end of a particular quarter (March 31, June 30, September 30, or December 31.)

At the end of this period, you should be able to purchase a machine and other sewing materials at an attractive price. The degree of your savings will depend on how much your

Garage Sales

A garage or yard sale is an informal event during which homeowners sell items, typically unwanted ones from their household. They’re often advertised using signs on different streets indicating the event’s existence and the yard sale address.

While you’ll likely have to sift through a lot of useless items, you may be able to find and purchase a sewing machine at a notably lower price than you would from a retailer. If the price is higher than you’re hoping for, you’ll often be able to negotiate with the individual selling it.

eBay is an e-commerce corporation specializing in connecting sellers and buyers and hosting purchases through face value buys, price bids, and auctions. It’s also an effective site for securely purchasing second-hand items. On sites like these, you’re able to acquire a variety of things in used or entirely new condition.

Generally, when people are selling these items, they’re sold at a significantly lower price than initially purchased for as they’re looking to get rid of them. Such situations like these serve as an opportunity to save money when buying a machine and materials.

Amazon Prime Day

Amazon, similarly to eBay, is an e-commerce website. Amazon Prime is Amazon’s paid subscription service. You can get select items the same day or within 1-2 days, along with many other shopping benefits, such as Prime user-exclusive deals. It also comes with many other benefits, such as Prime Video and Amazon Music, their streaming services.

Amazon Prime is $12.99 a month or $119 annually. However, if you get government assistance, you can get prime at a 50% rate reduction. As a student, you can get Prime free for six months, and from then on, a 50% reduction. If you don’t want a total commitment, you can also use their 30-day free trial.

Prime already provides many subscriber-exclusive deals; however, the best discounts are available on Amazon Prime Day.

Amazon Prime Day is an annual 48-hour event that offers deals exclusively to those with a subscription. The event doesn’t take place on the same days every year, so you’ll need to watch for the announcements of these dates.

Christmas and After Christmas

Christmas is not only an excellent time for sending and receiving gifts from your loved ones. Many businesses capitalize on this sentimental holiday to boost sales through substantial Christmas sales for those looking to purchase gifts.

After Christmas, these sales often continue as they look to get rid of the items that were not purchased prior to Christmas.

Mother’s Day

Sewing machines are often associated with motherly love and given as a gift for those who love us most. So many have the nostalgia of their mother sewing up a ripped patch on their clothes.

Therefore, many brands and retailers offer significant price cuts on machines and other sewing-related items.

Other Holidays and Holiday Weekends

Like Christmas and Mothers Day, there are often sales on other holidays, spilling into three-day cost cut weekends.

Some examples of holidays during which you can likely purchase sewing machines at a discounted price include:

  • Fourth of July
  • New Year’s
  • Labor Day
  • Memorial Day
  • President’s Day

On and around the dates of these holidays, you’ll likely be able to find sales ranging from one day to a week.

Sewing machines are items that have been in use for centuries to accelerate a practice that’s been in existence even longer. So they will likely not be fading into oblivion any time soon.

As you look for your first or newest sewing machine and materials, it’s essential to understand that you don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune on these items to get exceptional products for sewing.

There are many tactics you can use to minimize the degree of the expense. For example, knowing the best location and timings of these kinds of buys are highly effective strategies to avoid breaking the bank.
